The Hunger Games – Catching Fire – Movie Review

Dear readers,

I watched the second movie in the mega hit series, Hunger Games. Here’s my review of the  movie that takes place in future North America—approaching the end of winter.Catching Fire

Katniss Everdeen is hunting. She shoots at turkeys and imagines she shot a Tribute. Gale is there and comforts her. She and Peeta are going on a Victory Tour.

On Tour Day, she visits Haymitch Abernathy. Later, President Snow visits. “Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, should have blown you to bits when you won the Hunger Games. Your trick with the berries was an act of defiance. You defied The Capitol. I’m worried about an uprising. Revolution. A system collapse,” Snow says.

President Snow

President Snow

“It must be a fragile system, if it can be brought down by just a few berries,” Katniss replies.

Snow responds, “Convince everyone of your love for Peeta. For the sake of your loved ones. Convince Me.”

Cinna and the stylists from the capitol are there. They prepare her for a remote broadcast on Caesar Flickerman’s show. “Last year,” Caesar says, from The Capitol, “the 74th Hunger Games brought us the greatest love story of our time.” He introduces Katniss and Peeta.” “Katniss Everdeen! The Girl on Fire. Peeta Mellark! The Baker’s Boy!” They fake their love and kiss for the camera.

Afterward, everyone boards the high speed rail for the 12 day, 12 district, Victory Tour—ending at The Capital. Their first stop, District 11. Effie Trinket gives them their speech. Peeta ignores the speech. “We are donating one month of winnings to the families of the Tributes, every year, for the rest of our lives.” The people give Katniss and Peeta the hand signal for respect. The Capitol Guards kill the older man that was first with the signal.

After that tragedy, they read the speech at the stops. Caesar announces the Quarter Quell on his show. The tour ends at The Presidential Palace.

They meet Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Head Gamemaker—Successor to Seneca Crane. President Snow welcomes the Tributes and congratulates Katniss and Peeta on their engagement.

Plutarch Heavensbee tells President Snow how to turn the people against Katniss. They plan their strategy.

At District 12, Commander Thread terrorizes the town and whips Gale for defying him. Snow wants to terminate Katniss, Peeta, their families, and friends, for defiance. Snow announces the rule changes. “The Quarterly Quell. The 75th Hunger Games will be fought by past winners of the games.”

The Reaping takes place and Katniss is the only name in the drawing. Haymitch Abernathy is the male name drawn. Peeta volunteers. Commander Thread takes Katniss straight to the train—no Goodbye’s.

On the train, Haymitch explains, “This game is all new. You’ll be fighting, Cashmere and Gloss, brother and sister, from district 1. Brutus and Enobaria, career pack. Wiress and Beetee. The Morphlings, Masters of Cammouflague. Finnick Odair, youngest winner ever.” Among others.

Katniss and Peeta in Tribute Parade

Katniss and Peeta in Tribute Parade

At The Capitol, The Tribute Parade begins. The crowd cheers, “Katniss…Katniss…” as Katniss and Peeta’s suits are ablaze. Much to President Snow’s disdain.

Haymitch introduces Seeder and Chaff from district 11. They meet the very provocative, Johanna Mason, from district 7. Lumber trees.

On Caesar Flickerman’s show, the Tributes are interviewed. “The 75th Annual Games, the 3rd Quarter Quell. On stage, 24 of Panem’s brightest stars say goodbye. Only one will survive. At Snow’s request, Katniss wears a white wedding dress. She spins and the dress burns and turns into a Mockingjay—per Cinna’s design. Snow considers the dress an act of mockery to him. He has Cinna beaten.

Katniss' Mockingjay Dress

Katniss’ Mockingjay Dress

At the interview, Peeta announces they are married and Katniss is pregnant. It’s a lie. Snow orders the games to continue, anyway. He wants Katniss killed.

The 75th Annual Hunger games begin. “May the odds be ever in your favor.” They battle inside a giant dome, filled with south pacific topography, vegetation, animals, heat, and humidity.

The Gamemaker, Plutarch Heavensbee sends one plague after another to kill the Tributes as the game continues. Poison fog, Baboons, Giant waves, lightening, Spins the giant clock to disorient them, jabberjays.

Beetee comes up with a plan to use the lightening to kill Tributes and stay alive. Plutarch turns his idea against him and Beetee dies. Katniss uses the idea and electrocutes the dome. It starts crumbling.

Katniss is almost killed

Katniss is almost killed

As the dome crumbles, Katniss is almost dead. She is taken aboard a hovercraft and revived. “The revolution has begun. Katniss is the Mockingjay,” Plutarch Heavensbee says.

Later, Gale tells her, “District 12 was destroyed. I got your mom and sister out safely.”

The movie ends. This is my review of this thought provoking, mega hit movie. It’s about excessive dictatorial government control.

Until we talk again.

May good fortune guide your path,

Man of Steel – Movie Review

Dear Marvel Comic Fans,

I have a great movie review for you. I hope you like the new Superman movie as much as I did. This is a very high-tech, futuristic remake of the beginning of Superman.

The movie begins as Lara is having a baby on Krypton, the futuristic, mountainous planet. JOR-El, her husband believes Krypton’s core is collapsing.

JOR-EL talks to the Krypton Council

JOR-EL talks to the Krypton Council

Later, JOR-EL talks to the council. “I told you harvesting the core was suicide. The process of implosion has accelerated. Give me control of the Codex!”

General Zod, the military leader, disrupts the council meeting. Using weapons, he takes JOR-EL prisoner. He begins a great battle on Krypton. JOR-EL overpowers the guard and gets free. He tells Lara, “Ready the Launch!”

JOR-EL yells, “H’Raka!” The four winged, giant bug flies to his rescue. He jumps on H’Raka’s back and they fly away. JOR-EL wants to get to the Codex—it’s just beneath the central hub. As they arrive, Kelex, the communication machine warns, “Breaching the genesis chamber is a Class-B-crime.”

JOR-EL reaches the Codex. A soldier orders, “JOR-EL, by the authority of General Zod. Surrender the Codex.”  He is rescued by H’Raka—who is shot during the escape.

Upon arriving at the Citadel, he puts the Codex, a small, black skull like jewel, into the ship bound for Earth.

Kelex warns, “Five fighting ships approach.” JOR-EL uploads the Codex. The powers are transferred to the baby and the ship. As General Zod and his band of renegades attack, Lara arms the phantom drive in the escape ship that their son is in.

General Zod and Sub-commander Faora-Ul land in the Citadel. JUR-EL says, “We’ve had a boy child. Krypton’s first natural birth in centuries. He will be free!”

Zod says angrily, “Heresy!” Zod and JUR-EL fight. “Lara! The Codex is Krypton’s future. Abort the launch!” Zod yells as they fight.

As Lara launches the ship, Zod kills JUR-EL for his defiance. She says as the ship rises in the sky, “The boys name is KAL-EL.”

Zod orders, “Bring that ship down.”  As they try, Zod and his followers are captured.

LOR-EM orders, “General Zod. For the crimes of murder and high treason, the Council has sentenced you and your fellow insurgents to three hundred cycles of somatic reconditioning.”

Zod swears his vengeance, “I will find your son, Lara. I will find him! And get back the Codex.”  They are exiled in space. Soon after, Krypton explodes from the inside.

The movie switches to Earth, The Debbie Sue, a crabbing boat, is at sea. They are approaching an oil rig. The 6510 Coast Guard reports, “The rig is about to explode.”

Captain Heraldson, of the Debbie Sue replies, “What about the men inside?”

“Forget them. They’re dead,” the Coast Guard replies.  Before the rig collapses, a strange man, with super-human strength, saves the men. The stranger falls into the water. As he drifts in and out of consciousness, under the water, he remembers his past.

Clark Kent at the oil rig

Clark Kent at the oil rig

The movie switches to a young Clark Kent. We see several flashbacks where he remembers discovering his powers and using them to save people. He also recalls being lectured by his father for using these powers. Jonathon, his earth father says, “You’re the answer to are we alone in the universe. You were sent here for a reason.”

Clark, the adult man, is a drifter. After destroying a semi-tractor trailer at a restaurant where he worked, he travels to the Arctic. Lois Lane, a reporter for the Daily Planet, is there for a story.

Sekowsky reports, “NASA’s EDS satellites pinged an anomaly. They have found something big, deep in the ice. Ice that is 20,000 years old. It gets 40 below here.”

Using his heat vision, Clark tunnels his way to the alien craft. Lois sees him and follows. They discover aliens are living inside the ship. As the space ship takes off, Clark helps Lois escape—while he remains on board. While onboard, Clark is unaware that a signal from the ship reaches General Zod.

Lois and Perry at the Daily Planet

Lois and Perry at the Daily Planet

Later, Lois is at the Daily Planet. She writes the article stating that what she saw wasn’t from earth. Perry, her editor, refuses to print the story. Out of desperation, she leaks the story to Woodburn—who puts it on the internet.

Clark is still on the ship. He meets, JOR-EL, his father’s consciousness. “Your name is KAL-EL. You came from Krypton,” his father informs him. He explains the history of Krypton. How the people expanded into the universe. General Zod, their military leader, attempted a coup. The genesis chamber was used to create children on Krypton. You are Krypton’s first natural birth in centuries. The “S” is the symbol of the house of El—It means hope.”

Clark in his Superman Suit

KAL-El puts on the flying suit. As he remains on Earth, and absorbs the radiation from the sun, he grows stronger. He quickly learns to fly.

Lois Lane becomes an investigating reporter and learns his story. They meet at Jonathon’s grave, his earth father. He remembers his father dying in a tornado.

At NORAD/US NORTH COM, Command Center, Hamilton reports to General Swanwick, “A ship has inserted itself into a lunar synchronous orbit.”

General Zod is commanding the ship. Zod speaks over every communication device on Earth, “To KAL-EL. Surrender within 24 hours or watch this world suffer the consequences.”

The FBI quickly apprehends Lois Lane. The media asks, “Who is KAL-EL?”

After hearing the message, Clark remembers his father saying, “When you are ready, you will change the world.” Later, he surrenders.

Clark and his Earth father talking

Clark and his Earth father talking

Clark is turned over to Zod. Sub-commander Faora-Ul takes KAL-EL and Lois Lane aboard Zod’s ship. Clark gives Lois his Krypton key. Zod plans to kill all humans and start a new Krypton civilization on Earth. He wants the Codex. The genetic template for every being yet to be born is encoded in the registry of citizens. KAL-EL’s father stole the registry’s Codex.

Lois puts the key into a machine. Clark’s father appears, his consciousness. They devise a plan to put Zod and his army back into the Phantom Zone. “Remember, the phantom drives are essential in stopping them,” JOR-EL says to Lois.  He says to his son, “You can save Lois. You can save all of them. KAL-EL.”

The Super Battle on Earth begins.

General Zod Battles Superman

General Zod Battles Superman

Zod’s officer reports, “The Codex is embedded  in KAL-EL’s body. All of Krypton is embedded in his cells. KAL-EL doesn’t need to be alive to extract the Codex.”

“Release the World engines,” Zod orders. As the World engines land on earth, Zod orders, “Bring the phantom drives on line.”

“They are turning Earth into Krypton,” General Swanwick says. Lois brings KAL-El’s space ship to Swanwick. Clark says, “My ship is powered by a phantom drive. It bends space. Zod’s ship uses the same technology. If we can make the two collide with each other. A singularity can be created. A black hole. Zod and his soldiers should be sucked in.”

The 17,000 pound ship/bomb is loaded onboard a C-17 bomber. Before long, the C-17 Guardian, is loaded and on route to Metropolis. While Zod secures the genesis chamber.

A World engine is destroying Metropolis. Superman, as the media has named him, destroys that World engine. Soon, Superman also destroys the main ship.

On a suicide mission, the C-17 is flown into another World engine. Zod and his crew are sucked into the explosion. They are instantly gone. Metropolis is in ruins.

As Superman and Lois Lane kiss, somehow Zod appears. He and KAL-El continue to battle in the large downtown city—in a Super Battle! Soon, out of desperation, KAL-EL breaks Zod’s neck—thus killing him.

Daily Planet

Daily Planet

Later Clark Kent begins working at the Daily Planet as a reporter. The movie ends.

This is a tremendous movie. It is truly wonderful. The special effects are futuristic and out of this world. Even though it’s technically a remake, the story is so different that it’s a completely new movie. This is one of the most enjoyable and exciting movies I’ve seen in a while.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my review of Man of Steel. Until we talk again.

SHREK – Movie Review

Dear Fantasy and Fairy Tale fans,

I watched a very funny movie that I thought was wonderful. Shrek and Donkey made me laugh.

Shrek – the Ogre

The movie begins with, “Once upon a time there was a Lovely Princess. But she had an enchantment upon her of a fearful sort. Which could only be broken by love’s first kiss. She was locked away in a castle, guarded by a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knights had attempted to free her from this dreadful prison. But none prevailed. She waited in the Dragon’s keep. In the highest room of the tallest tower, for her true love and true love’s first kiss.”

Shrek, the ogre, is cleaning in the swamp where he lives.  The towns people are coming after him. Lord Farquaad has ordered all Fairy Tale Characters to be arrested.

The talking donkey is almost arrested. He meets Shrek. Shrek allows him to stay in the swamp for one night. Donkey says, “In the mornin’ I’m makin’ waffles.”

Lord Farquaad evicted the fairy tale creatures from their homes. They are all hiding in Shrek’s swamp.

Shrek and Donkey travel to Farquaad’s kingdom. He wants the evictions lifted so the characters can go back to their homes.

The Magic Mirror tells Farquaad he needs to marry Fiona if he is to be King of DuLac. She is a prisoner of the dragon. He is having a tournament to choose a winner to rescue Fiona from the dragon.

Lord Farquaad and the Magic Mirror

Shrek and Donkey arrive at DuLoc and enter the contest. In an easy victory, they defeat all of the solders—pro wrestling style. Farquaad sends Shrek to kill the dragon and rescue Fiona.

He and donkey agree to get his swamp back. They leave for the dragon’s castle.

Upon arrival at the castle, they cross a robe bridge. It suspends over a moat of fiery lava.

Donkey finds the dragon. Shrek grabs its tail. The dragon flings him through Fiona’s roof. He lands in her room.

As the dragon is about to eat donkey, Donkey starts complimenting the dragon. She falls in love with him.

Shrek rescues donkey and Fiona. They escape. As they travel back to DuLoc, Fiona insists on hiding each night.

Later at DuLoc, Farquaad and Fiona are being married. Shrek and Donkey ride the dragon to the wedding. During the wedding, at sunset, Fiona turns into an ogre.

Fiona says, “When I was a little girl, a witch casts a spell on me. Every night, I turn into an ogre.”  “By night one way, by day another. This shall be the norm until you find true Love’s first kiss. and then take Love’s true form.”

Farquaad orders her locked in the tower forever. Donkey and dragon enter the room. The dragon eats Farquaad.

Shrek kisses Fiona. The spell is broken. Fiona changes into an ogre permanently. They marry in the swamp and leave for their honeymoon.

The movie ends.

This is a wonderfully funny movie. It was a pleasure to watch. I love Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona. Lord Farquaad is a laugh.  To bad he was eaten by the dragon.

Until we talk again.

The Unthinkable Duo of Sesla

Dear Sesla enthusiasts,

Maxx and Art have an unusual relationship—not only for Sesla but probably anywhere. I would like to further define their circumstances and differences.

One Species of the Deadly Sea Doxer

One Species of the Deadly Sea Doxer

All Sesleans are an evolved fish amphibian species from the enchanted Sesla sea. Like most civilizations, there is a hierarchy—the most prestigious clan down to the lowest clan.

Maxx Zeqster was born a gifted Razion-Coterie—perhaps the most prominent clan on Sesla. He is also a scholar. Having been his class valedictorian at University of Kinkorx further defines his scholastic achievement. Immediately after graduation from the Criminal Justice program at U of K, he was awarded a prestigious job as a detective at Xcuymir Sheriff Department.  With all of his brilliance, he is a flawed coterie—flawed in self-confidence, research, and deduction skills.

Art Nekuma is a Pirtt-Coterie—the lowest clan on Sesla. Added to that disadvantage, his academic achievements are merely average. Despite his educational, financial, and social disadvantages,  he is a very thorough planner and a gifted researcher. As Maxx Zeqster said while speaking with Jeqrix Grexenn, the owner of the horned hares in The Kinkorx Horned Hares Slasher, “If anyone can find a pattern from the game films, Art can.”

In this scene from my novel, Jeqrix Grexenn hires the Zeqster-Nekuma Detective Agency to catch a killer who is murdering his mesnuk players.

Master of Disguises

Art Nekuma- “Master of Disguises”

Art is also a “Master of Disguises”.  His camouflage costumes are brilliant and unique. Between his cleaver cloaks and his unparalleled reasoning and research skills, he is the missing components to Maxx Zeqster’s brilliant character.

In my first novel, they perform their initial, very awkward, undercover operation.  During this extremely dangerous mission,  they uncover a secret that blows a Big case wide open. The bond is formed. Together they become, The Unthinkable Duo of Sesla.

Maxx and Art’s friendship grows throughout my books. They form a very powerful detective agency.

Maxx’s association with Art further defines his character.
Stay tuned, as I talk further about the characters in my Creepy Cases books.

Until we talk again.

Maxx Zeqster Up Close

Dear readers,

The truth is, two years ago a began searching for an idea. Any idea. That night and practically every night since, I’ve dreamed about Sesla and Maxx Zeqster. The next morning, I began writing my ideas. Maxx Zeqster and Sesla were born.

Desert Cactus That Thrive in Enchanted Sesla Desert Sand

Desert Cactus That Thrives in Enchanted Sesla Desert Sand- A Painting By Maxx Zeqster

My first novel, Sesla …The Enchanted Planet  took a year to write. It was my first published works, as well as an introductory novel. In that story, Iincluded  lengthy descriptions.  Sesla is a beautiful  planet and her coteries are a very attractive race.

On Sesla, none are more attractive than Maxx Zeqster. He’s a gorgeous, flowing blond haired, very tall and fit, resident of Bedsult. Bedsult is a suburb of Kinkorx—in the Seslean desert.

When I created a protagonist for my books, I envisioned a very alluring character with a very troubled childhood—who rose above that as an adult. Maxx was born of upper middle class parents. His father was a very driven and successful detective—now retired. His mother is a bitter narcissist—retired.

As a child and an adult, Maxx has struggles due to his insecurities of not living up to his parent’s expectations.

As time evolves, Maxx deals with these inner-personal issues his own way.  I failed to mention, Maxx is a gifted artist. He loves to paint desert landscape portraits.

Stay tuned. I’ll tell you more about my characters and their planet.

May good fortune guide your path,

J.A. Ireland.

Sherlock Holmes – Movie Review

Dear Holmes and Watson Fans,

I have a review that I think you’ll like. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s, Sherlock Holmes, is a true classic. With the protagonists, Lord Blackwood on the prowl, as Holmes would say, “The game’s afoot.” In this movie, Holmes is a champion fighter.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes

The movie begins as Lord Blackwood is performing a black magic ritual—a human sacrifice. This folly is interrupted by Holmes, Watson, and Inspector Lestrade. Lord Blackwood is captured.

The headlines read: Scotland Yard Catches Killer!  Another headline reads: Sherlock Holmes Aids Police

Blackwood will hang tomorrow. Read all about it! Our beloved detective lives at 221 Baker Street N.W.  Dr. Watson will be the attending physician for the hanging.

Lord Blackwood

Lord Blackwood

Before the hanging, Holmes, Watson, and his fiancée, Miss Mary Morstan have an evening meal at The Royale. While there, Sherlock uses his deduction skills to reason Miss Morstan’s life. His resourceful skills earn him a glass of wine in the face from Watson’s fiancée.

Later, Holmes gets a message, Blackwood wants to talk to him before he dies. Blackwood tells him three more people will die.

At the hanging, the official says, “Lord Blackwood is sentenced to death for the practice of black magic…the unholy murder of five innocent young woman…and the attempted murder of a sixth. Any final words Lord Blackwood?”

Blackwood said, “Death…is only the beginning.”  He was hanged.

Dr. Watson said, “That is the end of Lord Blackwood.”

Irene Adler enters the movie. She is staying at The Grand Hotel. Piccadilly London. She informs Holmes that Reordan is the key to what Blackwood was doing.

Irene Alder and Holmes in the library

Irene Alder and Holmes in the library

Soon, Blackwood is seen walking in the graveyard. The cement slab over his tomb is broken. Inspector Lestrade and his officers open Blackwood’s casket.

Adler’s dwarf midget is dead in the coffin.

“The game’s afoot,” Sherlock says. “Adler’s midget is the key to this.”

Later, Holmes and Watson discover a lab where the dwarf midget was working. They learn that Reordan was working with Blackwood.

Sherlock is abducted. Ambassador Standish from America, Lord Coward—the home secretary, and Lord Chief Justice are holding him at the northwest corner of St. James Square— the Temple of the Four Orders. There, they address Holmes.

The Temple of Four Orders practices black magic. Sherlock immediately deduces that the Lord Chief Justice is Blackwood’s father. Sir Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice, explains, “My son was conceived during a ritual with a follower—not my wife. She died during child birth.”

Later, Blackwood kills his father during his bath. Blackwood takes his Four Orders ring.

Lord Coward calls the Temple of Four Orders to order. “Sir Thomas is dead. I nominate Lord Blackwood as the head of the order.”  He addresses the order, “We will rule the world. We start by taking America back.”

Ambassador Standish from America will not stand with Blackwood and is killed.

The movie switches to Queenshithe Slaughterhouse, Nine Elms—a factory by the river. Holmes and Watson find Revelations 1:18 on the wall, “I am he that liveth, and was dead.”

Holmes ans Watson at Slaughterhouse

Holmes and Watson at Slaughterhouse

Blackwood is there and says, “And behold, I’m alive for evermore.”  He escapes in a boat while catching Holmes, Watson, and Adler in a dock explosion.

Later, while Irene Adler attempts to leave town, her true boss speaks to her, “I want what Reordan was making for Blackwood. Finish the job or the next dead body will be Sherlock Holmes.”

Out of desperation, Sherlock turns to the book of spells for clues. He believes Blackwood will kill in Parliament next. Sherlock, Watson, and Irene Adler enter Parliament through the basement. They discover Blackwood’s weapon—a remote controlled chemical weapon.

Lord Blackwood addresses Parliament, “I have returned from beyond the grave to fulfill England’s destiny and extend the boundaries of this great empire.”  His plan—to kill many members of Parliament.

His plan is foiled. In a final battle on a high rise construction sight, Blackwood is really hanged. He dangles by the neck high above the river.

Irene informs Sherlock that her real boss is Moriarty.

Sherlock later discovers how Blackwood survived the first hanging. He also learns what Moriarty was after. The wireless remote control for the chemical weapon. Sherlock says, “Wireless remote controls are the future.”

The movie ends.

If you are a detective story fan, like me—obviously, you’re sure to like this movie.  Robert Downey Jr. gives another great performance.

I hope you have enjoyed my review of Sherlock Holmes. Until we talk again.

May good fortune guide your path,

J.A. Ireland
