Art Nekuma Has Double The Worries

Dear horror fans,

When I wrote the Maxx Zeqster Creepy Cases, I wanted a crippling, mutating disease and a revolting asylum to institutionalize the unfortunate victims. Doxer fever and Dunjyn Asylun were the answers to my imaginative search.

This is an excerpt from The Dunjyn Asylum Escape. This brief cut from my story includes both features and a lot more.

Rydon was lying on his small bed in his rented room in Tos-Xiron. He was burning up with fever. His red rash covered arms and hands were unbearably painful. The grotesque red rash was spreading to his body. He thought as he lay feverous on his bed, “I need to go to Tos-Xiron Mitzid Hospital.”

The Dunjyn Asylum EscapeHe slowly and painfully crawled out of his drooping bed while moaning. His clothes were soaked with his fever perspiration. He slowly and painfully put on fresh clothes. “Oh…,” he moaned.

Rydon slowly exited the room and entered his small, rusty car. He had trouble focusing as he drove due to his high fever. He incoherently drove the short distance to Tos-Xiron Mitzid Emergency Entrance. Parked and hobbled inside.

The emergency room attendants quickly surrounded him and evaluated his condition. The staff recognized his condition and assigned Dr. Teqre Zewio, doxer fever specialists, to his case. The staff took him straight to a room.

Dr. Zewio was notified of his new patient. He prescribed the overnight treatment. He would check the progress of his new patient tomorrow morning.

Dr. Zewio entered Rydon Nekuma’s room. “How are you feeling?” he asked as he reviewed the charts.

Rydon painfully replied from his hospital bed, “A little better. Last night was scary. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

Dr. Zewio replied, “Your fever was very high last night. It’s lower today. How is your rash? Let me have a look.” He rolled back Rydon’s blanket. “Your rash is a little better. It isn’t as red as was reported last night. It seems to cover both of your hands, arms, and much of your torso.” He paused to check the charts again. Without looking up. “How did you acquire doxer fever?”

Rydon was shocked. “That’s impossible!” He exclaimed. “I don’t have doxer fever!” Suddenly he remembered the storm. “While distracted by a storm and financial concerns, I unloaded fish and doxers from my boat without gloves. The doxer’s ridged dorsal fins stabbed me several times on both of my hands. I didn’t even notice. I was so distracted,” he said as a panic began. He looked at Dr. Zewio with horror. “Am I going to mutate?” he asked as he trembled.

Dr. Zewio replied, “At this point, I couldn’t say. Doxer fever is a little different for each patient. When did you encounter the doxers?”

“Maybe two weeks ago. I’m not really sure.” He trembled with fear.

“Usually the doxer’s venom reacts much faster than that. With many victims, it’s instantaneous. Your symptoms are developing much slower than usual.”

Trembling he replied, “I had a small case of doxer fever once before. I only got a little rash. It was nothing. Went away quickly.”

“That could explain it. You might have some resistance to the doxer’s venom,” he said with hope.

Rydon looked hopeful as well. “You think that will help? You think that will stop me from mutating?” he asked as he panicked and trembled.

“Only time will tell. For now, I’m going to keep you one more day and continue with the medications that I have you on. Your symptoms should go into remission, at least for a while. Again, only time will tell.”

Terror gripped him as he said, “You mean, I’m going to be sick again?”

Dr. Zewio replied, “I’m afraid that’s the nature of doxer fever. The symptoms seem to repeat. We’ll get you feeling better and send you home.” He quickly exited the room.

Instantly, he recalled Lyndi’s doxer fever. “Her condition slowly progressed to the point she’s in Dunjyn Asylum.” He was horrified. He began to imagine and fear the horrific possibilities of his mutations…

Several Days Later

Rydon was admitted in Tos-Xiron Hospital, again. The doxer fever had returned. He was very sick again. He was terrified as he waited for Dr. Zewio.

Thirty minutes later: Dr. Zewio entered his room and began reading his charts again. “I see you’re back. How do you feel?”

“Not so good.”

“I see from your charts that you came in late last night with the same high fever and painful rash. The staff restarted you on the same medications as I prescribed before. Do you feel they are working?”

“I’m not sure. I don’t feel very good right now. Is there anything else you can do?” Rydon asked while frightened and trembling.

“Let me take a look at your rash.” Dr. Zewio rolled back his blanket. “The rash is covering your torso.” He was alarmed at what he saw. “I’m afraid the mutations have begun. Your hands and arms are in the beginning phase of mutating into doxer fins.”

Dr. Zewio rolled back the blanket on Rydon’s legs. The sight was equally alarming. “It would appear your legs are also mutating. Your feet are mutating into fins as well. You’re also forming a dorsal fin. Are you experiencing bewilderment, psychosis, or incoherence?”

With horror, Rydon replied, “I don’t know!”

“That would be normal. Patients with those symptoms are usually not aware of their condition.” He scanned Rydon’s chart again. “At least your fever is subsided again. I’m afraid at this point, there isn’t anything more I can do for you. I will have you discharged. When the fever returns, give us another visit if you like. I put the medications on your medical records in case you need to return here or somewhere else. I want to make it as easy as possible for you.” He put the charts away. “Good luck.”  Dr. Zewio exited the room.

Rydon was horrified. “I’m mutating. I’m going to be just like Lyndi. I’ll end up in a doxer fever asylum.” As he waited for the staff to discharge him, he continued with his frightening and horrifying thoughts and predictions about his grim future as a doxer fever mutant…

Later That Night

Rydon sighed deeply as he lay on his bed in his small, rented room. “I can feel my fever returning. My body is aching from this rash and mutations.” He wiped the clammy sweat from his forehead.

“My clothes are soaked from my high fever sweat.” He wiped the sweat from his forehead again. “I feel sick. I’m mutating. I hope I don’t have to go to the hospital again.”

He mumbled as he lay on his fever soaked bed, “Mr. Punmirre will want his rent money for this room soon, plus the back shortages I owe him. I don’t have it.”

He wiped the sweat from his forehead as he thought, “My boat rent is also due. Mr. Zinqwin will want his rent money soon plus the back shortages. I don’t have his money either.”

He pondered his dilemma as he wiped his feverous sweat again. “I also owe money to Dymor Zur, my gambling agent in Tos-Xiron. Thanks to this doxer fever, I’m going to lose everything.”

The pain in his hands was becoming unbearable again. He quickly checked his rash and mutations. He was horrified.  “I’m mutating fast! My hands are turning into doxer fins. I’m growing a dorsal fin. My feet are mutating into doxer fins. If I start getting the bewilderment, mania, or delusions, I’ll end up in a doxer fever asylum. I’d rather die!”

He tried to regain his sanity. “I need to remain calm. I don’t have the money that I owe, anybody! I’ve made some powerful enemies. It’s not safe here for me. I’d better leave Tos-Xiron before everyone that I owe money to, comes after me. I’d better leave while I still can.”

He pondered his dangerous dilemma as he feverishly sweated. Due to his high fever, he was soaking through his clothes again. “I’ll leave tonight, after midnight. But where will I go?”  He wiped the fever sweat from his face again.

Three Days Later

Rydon awoke from his feverish sleep. He had fallen asleep in the back of his car again. Now that he had fled from Tos-Xiron, his car, and his clothes that he was wearing were his only possessions. His clothes were soaked from his fever perspiration. “I know my fever is really high again. I feel very sick.”

He peaked at his painful, red, rash covered hands and arms. He was horrified at what he saw. “I’m mutating fast! I’m mutating into a sea doxer! My arms are becoming shorter and my hands are fin-like. This grotesque red rash covers my entire body!” he exclaimed with terror.

Rydon terrifyingly pulled up his pants legs and examined. He was even more horrified at what he saw. “My legs have dorsal fins growing out of the backs of them! My feet are more like fins than feet!” he said with terror. “Can I still walk?”

“I don’t know where I am. I don’t remember how I got here. I don’t know where this is or what time.” He was terrified as he recalled Dr. Zewio’s warning, “A psychosis that includes prolonged bewilderment, mania, delusions, hallucinations, incoherence, and distorted perceptions of reality will soon start.”

Rydon said while panicking, “I’m already experiencing the bewilderment, mania, hallucinations, and delusions. I don’t remember how I got here. I don’t know where I am. I don’t know when this is.”

He was horrified, as he lay soaked from the high fever sweat in his back seat. “I’m mutating fast! The mania and delusions are starting. Soon, I won’t be able to drive or walk.” He was horrified. “The psychosis has started. Soon I won’t be able to think or function.”

Suddenly he remembered Lyndi at Dunjyn Asylum. He was terrified as he thought about the horrific possibility. “I don’t want to be in a doxer fever asylum like Lyndi. I need help. I don’t know where to go. I have to think of something while I can still think.”

Later That Night

Rydon was delirious and grotesquely mutating as he drove. He could hardly stay on the Wyluxx Hwy as he swerved back and forth while attempting to drive with his mutating feet and hands toward Wyluxx City. He was in tremendous pain.

“Am I on the right road?” He wondered as his doxer fever manipulated his brain. He drifted in and out of hallucinations as the psychosis played tricks with his very ill mind. He was swerving back and forth, as he incoherently drove. He wasn’t sure where he was or when it was. “I hope I’m heading toward Wyluxx City.”

The psychosis from his doxer fever was causing him to drift in and out of reality. It was overpowering his sanity. He was experiencing extended periods of prolonged bewilderment, mania, delusions, hallucinations, incoherence, and distorted perceptions of reality. He was experiencing the full effects of the doxer’s powerful venom. “I’m going insane!” he said loudly as he drove toward Wyluxx City.

The pain from his full body grotesque rash and mutations were unbearable, as he swerved. The venom was mutating him into a sea doxer. His arms and hands were mutating into fin like appendages. His legs and feet were mutating into fin like extremities as well.

He was growing a full length, ridged, very sharp, webbed dorsal fin. His dorsal fin started at his forehead, just above his eyes and ran along his back all the way to his lumber where it split. It continued down the back of both of his mutated legs. “The pain from my dorsal fin is excruciating!” he said loudly as he winced from the pain while driving on the Wyluxx Highway through the desert toward Wyluxx City in the blackness of night.

He was incoherent and almost unconscious as he deliriously drove into the Wyluxx City Memorial Hospital Emergency Entrance. The emergency room staff removed him from his car and quickly evaluated his condition and reviewed his medical records.

The staff doctor admitted him into room number 1642 and notified Dr. Vinco Blixs, the hospital’s doxer fever specialist. Dr. Blixs checked Rydon’s medical records and prescribed the same treatments that Dr.  Zewio, doxer fever specialist at Tos-Xiron Mitzid Hospital prescribed, only a stronger dosage. He attempted to lower the extremely high fever and abate the quickly advancing mutations.

The Next Morning

Rydon continued receiving the heavily dosages of medications that Dr. Blixs prescribed the previous night in an attempt to reduce the extremely high fever and force the mutations into remission.

Dr. Blixs entered Rydon’s room. He reviewed his patient’s chart with concerned. “Even with the higher dosages, the medications seem ineffective in abating his mutations,” he thought, “To me, the mutations seem more advanced than what the emergency room doctor previously described on this medical chart, only his fever is improving.”

With alarm, he changed the medications in a frantic attempt to stop the progressing mutations. Thinking, “I’ll know in a few hours if this medication works.”

With little confidence, Dr. Blixs exited the room as Rydon lay in his bed unconscious due to the heavy medication. He had a high fever, grotesque red full-body rash, and was mutating rapidly.

Several Hours Later

Dr. Blixs returned to Rydon’s room. He was still unconscious. Blixs checked the charts again. “At least his fever is improving,” he thought  rolling back his fever sweat soaked blanket in anticipation of improvement. He was alarmed and horrified at what he saw. Rydon’s mutations were progressing at an alarming rate. He appeared more doxer than Seslean. Dr. Blixs shook his head as he made the grim decision. He thought shaking his head. Staring at the floor, “I’m powerless to slow the mutations.” He exited the room.

He walked to his office. “Nurse Koytin, get me Rydon Nekuma’s family,” he said grimly.

Nurse Kaayt Koytin searched on her computer. She was alarmed at what she read. “His former wife Lyndi Nekuma is a resident in Dunjyn Asylum. His son lives here in town. His name is Arthor Nekuma. His phone number is 577-301-22.”

Dr. Blixs dialed Arthor Nekuma’s phone number.

At Art’s Home in Wyluxx City

Arthor Nekuma, Detective Maxx Zeqster’s unlicensed apprentice, had just arrived home after buying a few groceries and a magazine at LyMuuke’s Food Center in Wyluxx City.

He was sitting on his well-worn, frugal couch while eating and reading. He was enjoying a copy of The Visqaser Report, “Who is Sesla and Who Are Her Coteries,” which he purchased at the store. The monthly geological, historical, medical and science magazine that Dr. Krag Visqaser, MD and Dr. Qen Pytmor, PhD, scientists started fifteen years ago during their later retirement. An article by freelance science writer J.A. Ireland entitled: Qashlet Laboratories Facilities, Dr. Rewqust, Insists Sesleans Evolved from the Sea Doxer

The Visqaser Report: Recently, my esteemed colleagues and I interviewed Dr. Rewqust at Qashlet Laboratories Facility in Guytic City. In attendance were Sygil Zeeg, Guytic City TV Science Editor; Ti Wopqir, Kinkorx TV Science Editor; and myself.

We discussed the genetic similarities between Sesleans and the sea doxer with the respected scientist. Due to Dr. Rewqust’s refusal, we were unable to address the very controversial, DNA genetic engineering experiments, or the other questionable research that his scientists at Qashlet Lab are working on.

Dr. Rewqust feels the scientific evidence is irrefutable. He stated, “There are many genetic similarities between our species and the doxer. Sesleans have fair, leathery skin like the doxer. All Sesleans feet have a fin-like look and structure that is similar to the doxer. We have a sharp row of bone in the entrance of our mouths like many of the doxer species but not all.

Their young hatch from eggs, as do ours.

The doxers has a webbed dorsal fin that runs the entire length of its elongated leathery body. Sesleans have the genetic remains of the dorsal fin running down our backs and the back of our legs. This partial dorsal fin is visible on many coteries, and is perhaps the strongest evidence of our genetic connection.

The evidence is overwhelming, even though many Sesleans choose to ignore it. The genetic similarities strongly suggest our evolution. The mutations that occur because of doxer fever validate the genetic similarities as well. Frankly, I do not understand the controversy or the outrage.”

It would seem that Dr. Rewqust agrees with his colleagues that Sesleans are genetically similar to the sea doxer. However, he failed to prove the scientific theory that Sesleans are an evolved species, evolved directly from the doxer. That scientific theory remains just that a theory. The theory also remains unaccepted in most circles, circles that are non-scientific.

After reading the article, Art thought sadly, “That would explain mom’s condition. She’s mutated into half Seslean and half sea doxer. She even swims like a doxer when she dreams.”

Suddenly he remembered his road trip to the Qashlet Lab. He thought, “We sure outsmarted Dr. Rewqust and his Mad scientists when we rescued Dr. Leqtus Kin, the genetic engineer, from his clutches, right under his noses. His thug, Fyrtee Huytek, was going to inject Leqtus Kin with doxer venom and enjoy watching him mutate.” He laughed.

Suddenly his phone began to ring. “That must be my boss, Detective Zeqster,”   He hurried to the phone. “Hello,” he said with a smile as he anticipated his cherished employer, Detective Maxx Zeqster.

“This is Dr. Vinco Blixs from Wyluxx City Memorial Hospital. Is this Arthor Nekuma?”

Art was horrified. He wondered frantically if his mom was in the hospital. “This is Art. What’s wrong with my mom?”

Dr. Blixs replied grimly, “This is about your father. He’s here at Wyluxx City Memorial, he’s very ill. Can you come over?”

Art was shocked. “What! I’ve never seen my father.  I’ll be right there.” He hurried out of the house and jumped into his car. He hysterically drove to the hospital. It was a brief, but panic filled drive.

A Short Time Later

Upon arriving at the nurse’s desk, Art asked, “Rydon Nekuma’s room number please?”

“Are you a relative?” asked Nurse TeDia Beem while sitting at her desk.

He paused. “I’m his son,” he replied uncomfortably with hesitation.

She began searching for his name. She had difficulty finding it. Sighed with irritation. “Spell it,” she said.

He shook his head with exasperation. “N…E…K…U…M…A!”

She did not appreciate the demeaning, exasperated look or sarcasm. She scowled as she said, “He’s in room 1642. It’s just down the hall.” Pointing.

“Thanks.” He hurried along the hallway to his dad’s room.

As he entered room 1642, Dr. Blixs was examining his father’s chart. “I’m Art, we spoke on the phone,” he said while still in shock.

Dr. Blixs put down his charts. “Your father admitted himself last night. He’s suffering from acute doxer fever. I have him on the strongest medications available. His fever is reduced,” he frowned. “I have been unsuccessful in slowing his mutations. Take a look,” he said as he pulled back Rydon’s blanket.

Art was horrified at what he saw. The unfamiliar Seslean lying there was unconscious. He was more doxer than Seslean. His arms and hands were long mutated fins. His legs and feet were mutated, disfigured appendages with malformed fins. He had a prominent dorsal fin running the entire length of his forehead, back, and the back of his mutated legs. A grotesque red rash covered his entire mutated body. The ghastly sights instantly made Art feel sick.

Dr. Blixs continued. “There is nothing additional that I can do for him. My recommendation is to assign him to a doxer fever asylum. Asylum doctors can continue with these medications. Hopefully in time he will improve,” said the doctor grimly.

Art was horrified. “What about his,” he paused to control his nausea, “mutations?”

“As I said, there seems to be very little that I can do to lessen or even stabilize them. An asylum doctor can continue these medications. Let the nurse’s staff know what your decision is.” He quickly exited the room.

Art stood next to his doxer fever stricken father. His shock was overwhelming. He thought for a moment. He made his decision. He walked back to the nurse’s station. Nurse Beem was still working the desk. “What did you decide?” she asked coldly as she anticipated his decision.

“I’m putting him in Dunjyn Asylum.”

She was horrified at his cruel, uncaring decision. “Are you sure?”

He ignored her strong body language. “Yes,” stating strongly.

“Ok…I’ll have him transported there immediately. He’ll be there in less than an hour,” she said with a disgusted, “How can you put your parents in Dunjyn Asylum?” expression.

Art further ordered as she glared with disdain, “Put him in room 38. It’s the room next to Lyndi Nekuma, my mother. It’s available.”

Nurse Beem was appalled, and shocked. “You’re in charge. I’ll take care of it. He’ll be there in about an hour,” she stated disgustedly.

Art walked away from the nurse’s desk. He thought as he walked toward the exit, “I’ll check on them tomorrow. I’m sure Dr. Neafyndrer will handle the situation properly.” He sighed as he walked and thought, “Now both of my parents are in Dunjyn Asylum. I have double the worries.”

Art exited the hospital and began his short drive home.

This has been an excerpt from my book, The Dunjyn Asylum Escape. This segment offers a good description of doxer fever and the resulting mutations. We also learn a small amount about Rydon Nekuma’s character. Plus the evolution controversy on Sesla.

Hansel and Gretel – Movie Review

Greetings horror fans,

I have a thrilling horror review from The Brothers Grimm. This is a remake of the original Hansel and Gretel and it’s even better.

Hansel and GretelA teenage girl is in shackles in a cabin in the woods. She is captured and roasted in an oven like a Thanksgiving turkey.

At The GingerBread House, Lilith works there. She is the owner. She is famous for her delicious meat pies. She overhears Deputy Carter saying there’s been another child turn up missing in the area.

Hansel and Gretel’s dad is getting re-married to Ruby. They are moving out of Candlewood. Selling the house. Getting a boat and traveling the world. Ruby is three years older than Hansel. They barely know each other. Hansel blames himself for his mother’s death. She was getting his medicine when she was killed.

Hansel isn’t happy about the decision and leaves. Gretel follows him into the dark woods. He gets caught in a steel snare, around his ankle. She frees him. Soon they find a cabin in the woods. Lilith lives there. She invites them in. She feeds Hansel meat pies and sweets. While doctoring his ankle, she gives him magic candy.

The Cabin in the woods

The Cabin in the woods

Lilith had twin boys and a girl, Abigail. Her brother Nathan died a long time ago.

Lilith serves Gretel tea. She falls asleep. The next morning she awakes. Lilith says Hansel was taken to the hospital. She gives Gretel candy for her headache.

Hansel is in shackles in the cellar with the other captives. Kevin. Jane. And other teenagers. More sweets are brought in. Doughnuts and cookies. They are being fattened for the slaughter. Meat pies.

Lilith gives Gretel the deed to The GingerBread House. She only needs to sign on the line. Gretel drops a glass vase breaking it. The glass cuts her finger. A drop of her blood falls on the deed and forms her signature on the line in blood. The deed is signed!

Lilith blows magic powder in Gretel’s face—drugging her. Afterward she finds Hansel in the cellar. At the same time, another teen girl is being roasted in the cellar.

Hansel and Gretel’s parents report their kids missing to the sheriff.

Lilith and her boys

Gretel is delivered to the cellar in a burlap bag. Jane is the next victim to be roasted in the oven. Hansel and Gretel escape.

John goes after them.

Gretel kills Bobby. She slits his throat.

Lilith goes into The GingerBread House. The deputy follows. “Why are you closed today Lilith?” Deputy Carter is suspicious. “Sheriff Meckes will want to talk to you.” She bashes him over the head with a rolling pin. His uniform is covered in blood.

Back at the cabin in the woods. Hansel and Gretel are trapped in the house. John gasses them. Hansel starts eating his own flesh thinking its candy. Then he disembowels himself in a really gross scene.

Sheriff Meckes accidently runs over one of the teen boys as he tries to escape. The boy dies. As he dies, he tells the sheriff about an old woman that eats kids in a cabin.

Hansel and Gretel finally escape the cabin and flee into the woods.

John comes after them with an axe. Sheriff Meckes shoots John multiple rounds in the chest killing him.

Lilith captures Gretel after shooting her

Lilith captures Gretel after shooting her

Lilith sinks an arrow into the Sheriff’s mouth killing him. Next she shoots Gretel in the arm. Hansel pulls out the arrow. Lilith takes them back to the cabin.

She’s a witch. She wants to eat Hansel’s heart. “It’s youth.”

Gretel stabs her just above the eye with a small cross and they run. As the witch pursues, they trick her. They trap Lilith in her own oven. “I picked you Gretel cause you’re just like me.”

“You know what they do to witches? They burn them.” Gretel turns on the oven.

Lilith being burned alive

Lilith being burned alive

Lilith is burned alive. The cabin explodes into a giant, fiery, mushroom cloud.

Later at The GingerBread House. Gretel re-opened the place for business. Lilith’s spirit is in her. She’s the young witch.

The End

Hansel and Gretel is a good horror movie. If you enjoy cannibal horror. There is one really gross scene. Hansel and Gretel is a well-written with good acting.

That’s my review. I hope you liked it.

Until we talk again.

The Song of Kings – Book Review

Dear medieval times readers,

Recently I was contacted by author Richard Chance. He invited me to read and review his novel, The Song of Kings. Since he put a lot of work into the offer, I agreed to do so. I read his entire novel. Here’s my review of the medieval times tale.

The story begins as a bearded, old man is in a cell. He’s being tortured. His captors want to know who he is. Which he does not remember. Instead, he tells them a story…

The Song of KingsThe Crystal Palace was ten centuries old and still growing. It’s magical. Samakand, the capital city of Regis lay in the distance. The seat of the galactic empire. On a mountain of ice, a hidden world lay beneath the surface. The Emperor Ptolemy Sy’r Darya rules Regis.

Phalon, is the physician that is attending to the royal mother, Queen Eugenia. She is having twins. Phalon makes certain one baby dies. He plans to kill the Queen as well. The living child is named. “Little Leonidas.” The first born. The second child is allowed to die. Never encouraged to begin breathing. Therefore still born.

Dr. Langstrum, the court physician examines the dead infant. Pronounces it dead . Never suspects foul play by Phalon.

Phalon’s plan is to kill the Queen next. Her marriage was political to settle long standing disputes. He plans to control the only heir to the throne. He hung a ruby red, crystal around Little Leonidas’ neck. He said the ancient words, “vallo of regnum.” The necklace was activated.

The child is King Ptolemy’s son. Prince Leonidas Ptolemy Sy’r Darya.

Alexander Phalon is a wizard. He can read minds.

Noblemen gathered to celebrate the birth of the prince.

A clone is buried alongside Queen Eugenia. The royal child lives. Gwendolyn kidnaps the child along with her partner Tichtius, the fisherman. Gwendolyn and Tichtius met at The Wheel. Also where they meet the Stranger. Dressed in black. Blue eyes. He explains to them about a democracy form of gov’t. Afterward, Gwendolyn and Tichtius flee in a boat with the infant king. Soon, Tichtius kidnaps the baby from Gwen.

The Scholar, and old man, Nur’ed’ Din, lives on the River Ashoka. Soldiers are invading his home. Written on his cellar wall. “Sapiens Qui Prospicit” He is wise that looks ahead. He is killed by the soldiers. Shot in the head. The house is searched without success.

Leonidas has a new tutor. “Theolon.” He was the kings tutor. Now he will tutor the king’s son. Teaching him what he needs to know to rule.

“Was is coming to this kingdom!” King Ptolemy declares. “Seven years ago today the aliens attacked. The Rifters!” Causalities were catastrophic. They look like The Rifters.

King Ptolemy wants to attack The Rifters in their home-world. Through the nebula. He wants to capture and occupy the Rift Nebula. They need to amass a fleet of ships.

The supply station on the edge of the Monoceros system for the Regis fleet on route to the Great Rift Nebula is almost abandoned. One ship guards the facility. Using a stolen transport ship, they attack the supply station.

Leonidas’ instructor is Professor Theolon Alexander Kâldân. He teaches him history.

His father, King Ptolemy teaches him The Song of Kings. How to fight with a sword.

Greylean tells Ja’din a story. The Iliad. The story of gods and men, the warriors of two great warring nations.

An old man, Theolon, shows Leonidas a secret tunnel. It leads to outside the Great Palace. “I’m finally outside!” Leonidas declares. They go into an alley, into the village. Leonidas is hooded for his safety.

Lillian is dying. Greylean is her husband. Ja’din is their son.

King Ptolemy has visions.

Leonidas turns eight. He has a birthday party. Theolon reads the story; The Lion and The Unicorn; The Fairy Tale.

King Ptolemy is sick. He’s paralyzed. He turns to Theolon for help. The king opens a chest. Inside they find the Crystal Shard of Salâhad-Dîn. It’s black. A magic crystal. Alive. Like the palace. More objects in the chest. Dagger of Vajrakîlaya—capable of space travel.

Theolon, the wizard, takes kingship away from Ptolemy. He causes a hideous creature to appear. Like a creature in a nightmare. It’s a hologram.

Calanus is another wizard in the book.

Leonidas and Ja’din escape the castle through the same tunnel on route to the village. Inside the cavern, the encounter a giant, metallic, motion sensitive spider. After visiting the village, they return to the castle where they’re safe.

The End.

The Song of Kings by author Richard Chance is a charming story set during medieval times. His story incorporates daggers, kings, knights, a magical castle, magic spells, wizards, etc… Many of the features one might expect to find in a novel of that genre are present.

Also mentioned very briefly are aliens, cloning, deep space travel, and past inner-galactic war—without needed details connecting them to the story. R J Chance indicates this is the first novel in a series. Perhaps we will read more about how these and other open plot lines connect to the main story line in further books. It should make for interesting reading.

I read The Song of Kings by author R J Chance due to a special invitation via facebook. I downloaded it through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

My rating: 3.5 stars

Constitution – Book Review

Dear space thriller fans,

Recently I read a very enjoyable scifi thriller by author, Nick Webb. Constitution is the first in a space trilogy. Here’s my review of this fun novel that takes place predominantly in our solar system.

Book 1 of The Legacy Fleet Trilogy

ConstitutionSector 521. 10 light years outside of United Earth Space Bridge. ISS Kerouac. Their sensors are picking up a signal. Captain Disraeli is in command of the Kerouac. He lives in Britannia. He’s lost a lot of money on a bad investment.

His chief engineer is being reassigned.

They are looking for the swarm. The swarm has been there before and left. They rebuilt and prospered. People thought the swarm was destroyed with the last war.

They are q-jumping to sector 522. Commander Gooding is called to the bridge.

Captain Disraeli suffers from Rigellian warts compliments of the red light district of New Mumbai on Rigel Three.

Veracruz Sector Operations Center Starbase Heroic. Admiral Ryten plans to send a scouting ship after Disraeli and crew if he doesn’t hear from them in five hours.

Sol System. Earth orbit Valhalla Space Station. Captain Tim Granger. Admiral Yarbrough is decommissioning the Constitution. Scrapping her. Avery is the President. He commands ISS Legacy. ISS Baltimore. Eagleton Commission is forcing military cuts.

The Swan war was 75 years ago. The Swarm is gone. A war they won by pure luck.

Tim Disraeli plans to retire at 64.

Veracruz Sector Starbase Heroic. Built for Defense. One of several outposts at the edge of United Earth Space built after the Swan war and Earth was destroyed. Admiral Ryten is in charge of the small space city. Heavily armed.

Two missing ships. A scout ship and the Kerouac. Ryten orders, “Prepare a report for IDF CENTCOM. Ask them for guidance.”

L-2 Lagrange point, Earth Conference Room. ISS Constitution. Chief Engineering Officer Rayna Scott. Captain Granger battled cancer five years earlier and won.

A q-jump takes a minute to complete. And advances the ship a tenth of a light year.

A battle is discovered and a destroyed planet. Nueva Leon.

The Constitution is being decommissioned at Lunar Base. Less than a week away. They’re on their way.

The Swarm is back at Veracruz Sector, Leon System – Southern continent. A full scale invasion.

On the Constitution, Tim Granger’s cancer has returned. He has a few months to live. Steps down. He gets a priority one message from CENTCOM. Unidentified vessels sighted on trajectory towards Earth. ETA 1 Hour. “Alert Condition Red.”

“The Swan. Little Cumrats are back!”

Several ships q-jump into orbit around Jupiter. Six or eight large carriers or cruisers.

Granger re-assumes command of the Constitution even though he’s dying of cancer. “Battle stations. Sound general alert status orange.”

The swarm’s headed for Earth!

The Constitution battled the swarm 75 years earlier in the first swarm war.

Granger organizes a squadron of 177 fighter pilots and their ships to battle the swarm. Does he have enough time to save his ship and the world before his brain cancer kills him? Before the swarm reaches Earth? Before the swarm kills him?

A miniature black hole appears. Granger orders, “q-jump to Valhalla Station.” Only 15 fighters left.

The swarm is a liquid-based life form. They appear as slime.

The Earth is under attack. The Constitution is badly damaged in the battle. Can only q-jump one more time.

The ship prepares for a showdown in low Earth orbit with the swarm.

The Constitution is nearly destroyed. Granger blows up the Constitution. “Take that, you bastards—” With a blinding flash, the Constitution plunged into the singularity, disappearing into a violent flair. For a split second, the invisible quantum tethers connected the singularity with the reactor cores inside the alien ships. Causing massive explosions. Intense radiation.

The alien ships were defeated. The Constitution was gone with Granger.

They located the Constitution. It’s falling towards Earth. They locate Granger inside.

The ship is falling like a fireball over western Utah. Shelby Proctor, Granger’s XO goes in after him. Finds an engine still running. Barely.

She averts a crash and glides the ship over the Great Salt Lake at super-sonic speed, while on fire. The Constitution comes to rest in the business district of south Salt Lake City.

Granger believes he has only a week to a month to live. He visits a new doctor. The doctor says, “No trace of cancer. Free to go!”

The Constitution is being refurbished. Granger wants her back. He’s the new captain. In six months. “Congratulations!” Until then he commands the ISS Warrior.

The End.

Granger reminded me a lot of Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picard is one of my all time favorite star ship captains. Therefore, I also liked Granger a lot. The way they worked as one unit, the Swan reminded me of the Borg—also from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

This was an easy and fun novel to speed read through. I enjoyed getting lost in deep space with Granger and his crew aboard the Constitution. It brought back fond memories of  Picard and Next Generation, for me at least as I read. I was very glad all worked out well for Granger in the end.

Thanks for tuning in to my review of Constitution, by author Nick Webb.

A very enjoyable book. I recommend it to any scifi and  space fans.

I downloaded this book through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

My rating: 4 stars.

Until we talk again.

May good fortune guide your path.

Patrick: Evil Awakens – Movie Review

Dear creepy asylum fans,

I have a frightening asylum movie review that horror fans everywhere are sure to like. Turn down the lights and make some popcorn. Get ready for my review of Patrick; Evil Awakens.

patrick-evil-awakensThe movie begins in the dungeons basement of the Roget Clinic.

While attending to the coma patients, a nurse is attacked. Someone stabs her with a hypodermic needle and injects yellow serum into her eye.

Dr. Roget the Mad Psychiatrist

Dr. Sebastian Roget the Mad Psychiatrist with Patrick

Sebastian Roget is the youngest student ever admitted into Oxford Medical School—a medical genius whose interest is traumatic brain injuries. After graduation, he assumes the position as head psychiatrist of Roget Clinic—the family owned business.

Matron Cassidy is his daughter and head nurse. She was once married. Her husband killed himself.

Kathy Jacquard applies for a job at the old convent turned coma clinic and is hired. Nurse Williams works there—a long time employee.

Soon, Kathy meets Patrick—a coma patient for several months. She also meets Mr. Fraser—a victim of an electrical explosion. He was a railway signalman.

Later, Nurse Williams and Kathy Jacquard are at a local pub. They meet Dr. Brian Wright, also a psychiatrist. He has abandoned the medical profession and pursued a public career in television and radio.

At the clinic, Dr. Roget orders the Ophthalmoscope for Patrick and injects him with the same yellow serum. Soon after, everyone associated with Patrick begins to do things they are not aware of and has hallucinations. They spit and cut themselves.

Patrick in a coma

Patrick’s brain begins to live. He has telepathic powers. He communicates by spitting. Dr. Roget uses electroshock therapy on Patrick’s brain.

While in the coma, he soon begins voyeuristic and psychopathy behavior. Using his mental powers, he kills Dr. Wright in his car. Patrick causes his car to drive over a cliff into the ocean.

Dr. Roget continues the electroshock treatment. With each session, Patrick’s brain grows stronger.

We learn, as a young adult, Patrick was a pervert and voyeur. He killed his mother and other people.

As his mind grows stronger, and his body remains in the coma state, numerous people attempt to kill him—without success. His mental powers are too strong.

Patrick awakes from the coma

Patrick awakes from the coma

Soon, Patrick causes the other coma patients to awaken.

We learn that Dr. Roget was experimenting on most of the patients. He hid body parts in the cellar.

There are more attempts on Patrick’s life—also without success.

Finally, Patrick awakes and leaps out a window, impaling himself on an iron fence below. He dies.

Next we see Dr. Roget. He is now a coma patient in his own clinic.

This is a chilling, asylum thriller. Very creepy.  Dr. Sebastian Roget played an excellent Mad Psychiatrist.

Another thrilling asylum review from the fantasy, fiction, horror writer. The author of Sesla…The Enchanted Planet and Maxx Zeqster Creepy Cases.

May good fortune guide your path.
